Day 24: Canyons of the grandest nature

23 may 2011

We were further away from the Grand Canyon than we originally planned, so we hopped on the road and started pushing towards the Canyon with a quickness. While riding through the National Forests around the area, we both agreed that it looked like perfect hammock territory.

Entering Grand Canyon National Park, we were both really surprised at how many trees there were. We both thought it would be desert up to the edge of the Canyon. The South Rim village was also huge. There were shuttle buses and everything. It was its own little town.

At Mather Campground, we checked in and found our spots. We weren't able to set up our hammocks yet though. Apparently there are some stupid elk that wander through the campgrounds and get caught in hammocks, so they don't let you have one set up unless you're present. What I want to know, is what happens when that stupid elk walks into your hammock while you're in it?!

For a day hike, we went down the South Kaibab trail almost to the halfway point. We started pretty late and failed to make note of what time we started so we turned around in order to make it back in time. I really wasn't sure how I would like the Grand Canyon. There is so much hype about it, that I didn't think it could live up to the hype. Well folks, it did. The pictures simply cannot capture the grandeur of the views and how insignificant the canyon makes you feel.

It turns out that we could have hiked to the actual halfway point safely, but it was a wonderful hike. Sadly, it showed how out of shape I am. Afterwards, we rode the shuttle buses for quite some time before setting up camp and enjoying some chili on jalapeƱo/cheddar tortillas. Oh, and we were surrounded by German tourists. It seems to be a theme to this trip. German tourists are everywhere. Luckily, no stupid elks ran into us during the night.
