Day 25: Getting kicks on Rte 66

24 May 2011

This place was run by grandmothers and my burger was absolutely delicious. I was also able to get a soup instead of fries. The chicken tortilla soup was also great.

We rode along historic Rte 66. Unfortunately, we really didn't get many kicks. One town was hopping with all sorts of tacky stuff, but the rest of the road was really pretty run down. The interstate truly did kill Rte 66.

We initially thought that you had to ride over Hoover dam in order to get to Las Vegas. Apparently that changed a few years ago when they built a bridge.

I'm glad that we went over the dam. It was rather impressive and had incredible art-deco architecture.

Lake Meade was beautiful, and the neighboring Boulder City looked quite swanky.

Shh.... this was actually taken the day we left. I missed my opportunity to take a shot of the sign when we came in.

We cruised up and down the strip before we checked into our hotel, the Tropicana. The strip is a fantastic assault on the senses. After checking in, we had to carry a bunch of luggage a ridiculous distance to get to our elevators. I felt like I was on a serious road march. But overall the hotel was newly renovated and magnificent for the price.

Thinking that we could easily find dinner on the strip, we walked up it on foot for a while. Unfortunately, everything was either really expensive or a chain. So with a little help from a smart phone, I looked up a couple places off the strip that appeared to be only a few blocks away. Nobody told us that each block was almost a mile long. We got to one place which was located in the Hard Rock Casino. It was closed. We ended up eating at a pricey Indian restaurant and we were just about the only people in there. I ordered a couple appetizers to get a taste of things. The meal was decent, but the naan was delicious. It was awkward having all the wait staff looking at us. And our waiter brought us silverware, took it away, and brought us new silverware several times throughout the meal and even after it. We weren't sure if we were being messed with on a TV show.
