Day 27: A hippy little place called Idllywild

26 May 2011
Leaving Las Vegas, we entered some pretty barren looking landscapes and eventually pushed past the Mojave. As we got towards Barstow(which apparently has the largest non-functioning thermometer), the headwinds got almost unbearable. They had to of been at least 30mph. My neck was getting a serious workout as my head felt like it was going to rip off. We also lost about 20 miles on that gas tank.

Big Bear was one of our pass-throughs for the day. It was there that we got our first surfer "shaka hand" for being the awesome guys we are.

We planned on going down 330, but it was closed due to mud slides and we ended up going down the "Rim of the World Highway". Parts were breathtaking and parts were heart stopping. The road was a little more my speed, but even so the local traffic was bombing down it like it was nothing.

Mike recently heard that San Bernardino is one of the worst places to be for cars hitting pedestrians. We hoped it wasn't also true for motorcycles. Once we got down the mountain from Big Bear, it really started to feel like SoCal. That wasn't necessarily a good thing for the major roadways.

Getting out of traffic in San Bernardino, we headed up into the San Jacinto Mountains. It was troubling at first because we didn't see any trees for our hammocks. That changed and also the road was the perfect combination of properly angled sweepers, S-curves and switchbacks. It was also a great speed to be able to take in the scenery while you get the bike leaned over.

We finally reached Idyllwild. The gas was rather expensive, but the town had a neat community feel to it. At our campground, we ran into a guy who was either telling us his life story, or the plot to easy rider. We couldn't tell which. Then he proceeded to start talking about meditating and how we needed to ride to the base of some mountain to find ourselves. Yup, we were now in California.
